3 Fun Ways To Save For Special Occasions
Saving up money can seem like an overwhelming task but breaking it down into specific categories that you’re excited about and that inspire you makes it more fun and motivating. Goal-oriented savings are a fun way to steer your funds to what you enjoy. Figure out events that you really love and aim for saving for those things and it will feel more manageable!
1. A vacation savings
I have a savings account specifically for travel and add a monthly amount to it. It feels good to know I have this extra money set aside for a small weekend trip. Alternately, it can even be for a longer dream trip. Start planning a trip to your dream destination (for me, Paris!) and then set a time period for this trip such as next summer. Add an automated deposit to it every week or month and voila!…you’ll be headed on your vacation before you know it. It’s also more likely that you’ll go since money will be saved up for it and a plan is in place!
2. Christmas account
For me, I don’t want to go crazy and overspend at Christmas and this helps keep my spending aligned with my gift goals and knowing that I have that extra money set aside for Christmas travel or gifts feels great at the end of the year when things can feel overwhelming and expensive. I normally use my credit card for the gifts so I can still earn credit cards points then transfer the Christmas money to checking and payoff the credit card at the end of December or beginning of January. It makes the new year feel like you’re off to a great start with no Christmas debt!
3. Fun money
We all work hard for the money we earn so not everything should be bills and payments. One of the best ways to keep you on track monthly is to allocate money for social events. Based on the money that you earn, you can calculate how much can be set aside for fun money after paying the required bills. Dates, concerts, happy hour with friends, movies, and so on. Some months can feel more overwhelming than others and those months may require less funds going into the fun money account but being frugal and keeping track of what expenses you have can help grow this account.
I hope these ideas have given you a fun approach to saving money! Automating the deposits always helps! Make sure your checking and savings accounts do not charge monthly fees. If they do, ask about it being removed or move your money elsewhere. There are many options for free accounts. This will help you save money even faster!
